Christiane Wittig

Christiane Wittig born in Germany, graduated as a Media Artist from the Bauhaus- University Weimar in 2003. She continued developing her artworks in Sydney, Australia. Postgraduate Master in Art Design and Media, Brussels, she obtained in 2006 the scholarship of the Else-Heiliger Fond (EHF) at the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation in Berlin, Germany. Wittig’s projects include interactive media installations as well as film and photography. Her interactive compositions bring the spectator into the fragile cycle of emergence and misdemeanours. She is primarily concerned with poetry of live, in the vehicle of mechanical construction. Her work has been exhibited in Belgium and Germany, as well as in private and corporate collections.

Development background

Throughout my work I integrate digital media into objects both created and found. This process of integration fuses the object with a metaphorical meaning manifest in myriad aspects of the artwork. I seek to create meaning, to provoke, to evoke feeling and emotion in the participant by establishing a dialogue which operates in terms of both the object and the (object in the) space. Precisely this type of process is at work in some of my earlier exhibitions in which themes of fragility and ephemerality were explored in the interaction between object, space and participant. The fusion of various types of media with plexiglass (perspex), a material common to all my work, enables me to examine the larger dynamic at play in notions of fragility and ephemerality. The use of a transparent, malleable, lightweight, (fragile?) material in what are often large, dominant spaces demands consideration and interaction in a way that is not reductionist or passive – as in so many works of media art.
